committment pays off
Apprentice Pipefitter Chris Bakershowed the rest of his year group what hard work and dedication can do by winning Apprentice of the year at the Tees Valley Apprenticeship Scheme (TVAP) Award Ceremony. After leaving Macmillan College, Chris joined NETA in October 2009 as a Pipefitting Apprentice four weeks later than the rest of his group. Despite his late start, Chris’s mature outlook enabled him to catch up with his peers very quickly.

Chris showed exceptional commitment to his programme by completing his first year unpaid. He took on part time evening work to fund his travel costs to NETA whilst other apprentices were receiving an allowance/contribution.
Through this adversity Chris never allowed his part time work to impact on his attendance or work at NETA Chris’s eagerness to learn and rapid progress with his coursework earned the utmost respect of his Instructor, Assessor and fellow apprentices.
Chris’s positive attitude and excellent attendance prompted NETA to forward his name to one of its long-term employers. After offering Chris a placement in October 2010, Cordell are thoroughly impressed with Chris’s skills.
John Richardson, Pipeshop Manager at Cordell said “Since joining the workshop Chris has shown a refreshing thirst for attaining all the knowledge he can in his chosen career and has no problem communicating with his colleagues of all ages and I am confident that he will become a more than competent tradesman”.
Chris was one of over 100 Apprentices on the TVAP programme entered for the award, but his excellent work ethic and dedication made him out shine all of the competition.
Jan Marciniak from NETA said “Everyone at NETA congratulates Chris on receiving this well deserved award. Chris is a shining example of how dedication and hard work can pay off. Well done Chris”.
