Plating

Platers work with heavy metal plate. They use heavy-duty cutters and burners and large rolling and pressing machines to shape the metal plates, working in giant workshops or outdoors, for example, on a partially built ship or a  construction engineering site that may be exposed to the weather.

Platers help to make, modify or repair products like ships, agricultural and construction machines, storage tanks, large boilers, containers and pipework for chemicals. They may be involved in erecting power stations, chemical plants and oilrigs.

   
What will be covered in the training?
  • Training will be practical using industrial equipment, tools and machinery found in the workplace.
  • You will learn about Health and Safety and safe working practices.
  • How to use heavy-duty guillotines to cut plates, and burners (flame-cutters) to form curves and complex shapes.
  • How to use giant rollers to press, bend and curve plates.
  • Learn how to interpret engineering drawings and mark out lines for cutting and assembly.
  • How to set up pieces for assembly using metal blocks, clamps and other methods.
  • How to clean, file or grind plate edges in preparation for welding,
  • How to tack weld pieces together in preparation for the welder.
  • Methods of Grinding and finishing pieces.

TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE

This qualification assesses the specialist knowledge and understanding associated with welding.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Platers work in manufacturing industries such as car, aircraft, ventilation equipment and office furniture manufacture.  They also work for engineering and civil engineering companies involved in projects that require the fabrication of large metal structures, such as oil rigs and storage tanks.
