Pipefitting

Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping and bending pipe in preparation for welding. Often working alongside welders they connect piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in difficult conditions.

   
What will be covered in the training?

General health and safety in engineering construction, specific pipefitting safety and safe working conditions, working at heights, slinging and lifting, technical drawings, specifications and British Standards Engineering materials, use of basic hand and power tools, cutting and preparing pipe and plate tack welding, oxy fuel cutting, setting out and developing patterns, cold bending ferrous and non ferrous pipe, fabricating pipework and supports, assembling pipework, installing pipework systems, preparing and hydrostatically testing pipework systems.

Key skills:- Application of Number, Information Technology, Problem Solving, Communication, Improving own learning and working with others.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Job opportunities are expected to be excellent as demand for skilled pipefitters is expected to outpace the supply of workers trained in this craft.  Many employers report difficulty finding potential workers with the right qualifications.  In addition, many people currently working in these trades are expected to retire over the next 10 years, which will create additional job openings.
